How I Got Amazon SP-API PII Access in 2025: A Complete Guide

Introduction

Getting access to Personally Identifiable Information (PII) through Amazon SP-API is a critical step for many developers, SaaS providers, and Amazon sellers building tools that require customer information. In 2025, Amazon's policies are stricter than ever — but with the right process, it's absolutely achievable.

In this article, I share my full experience as an Amazon SP-API consultant and how I successfully obtained PII access for myself and my clients.

Step-by-Step: How I Got Amazon SP-API PII Access

1. Registering as a Developer

To begin, I registered as a developer in Amazon Seller Central:

  • Created a developer profile
  • Submitted company information
  • Linked my IAM user credentials and created a SP-API app

2. Understanding Restricted Data Access (RDA)

Amazon uses the RDA process to approve PII access. To qualify:

  • You must clearly justify why you need access (e.g., customer address for shipping tools)
  • You must pass a data protection and security audit

3. Writing the Data Protection Plan (DPP)

Amazon requires a comprehensive DPP. My document included:

  • Encryption protocols (AES-256)
  • Access logging & monitoring
  • Role-based access control
  • Incident response plans
  • Data retention policies

This document took the most time. I modeled mine after Amazon’s sample template, and emphasized compliance with GDPR and CCPA.

4. Submitting the RDA Application

On the Developer Console:

  • Clicked "Apply for Restricted Data"
  • Selected PII endpoints (GET Orders, GET Order Address)
  • Uploaded my DPP

Response time: ~7 business days.

5. Amazon Review & Remediation

I got feedback requiring small revisions:

  • Clarified encryption key management
  • Added log review procedures

After resubmission, I was approved.

Tips for Success

✅ Be Specific in Your Justification

Vague explanations like “we need to manage orders” won’t work. Instead, specify:

“We are building a shipping automation app that prints carrier labels; to do so, we must retrieve buyer shipping addresses.”

✅ Use a Real Security Framework

Reference ISO 27001, SOC 2, or NIST standards in your Data Protection Plan.

✅ Don’t Fake It

Amazon may ask for evidence (screenshots of audit logs, encryption setup). Only apply if your system meets requirements.
